An Interview with Documentary Filmmaker Anne Troake

Anne Troake is a Newfoundland filmmaker with a long family history of seal hunting. Troake has used her talents as a filmmaker and artist to help represent those silenced and harmed by activists, most notably the 2005 documentary My Ancestors Were Rogues and Murderers.

In 2023, “Seals, Stigma and Survival” principal investigator Danita Burke had the opportunity to interview Troake about her work documenting anti-sealing violence against rural and coastal sealers, and the importance of seal hunting to her culture, family and work. This interview was published by the Arctic journal’s InfoNorth series and is available free.

Troake is an observer on this project.
